Event Overview
- Event: International Team Tournament
- Format (WTC / UKTC / etc.): UKTC Teams
- Army: Imperial Guard – Grizzled Company
- Rounds: 5
- Final Record: 3-2 (Personally),
- Overall Feeling:
Pre-Event I was nervous, Imperial Guard were my first army but they had been on the shelf for a long time while I focused on my Space Wolves. However, I felt clear on my Primary scoring plan in most games and my list had secondary scoring units. However, I identified several moments where I traded too aggressively and paid for it on primary. The framework held up — my execution needs tightening.
What Went Well - Deployment for board presence and threat: I am happy with how I deployed my Rogal Dorn Tank Commanders. Each game they were able to move to have control over key diagonal firing lanes whilst remaining safe from return fire or charges
- I preserved my trading and primary denial units more effectively. Prior to building the Sharp Scoring System I would often push my trade and scoring units up too soon and lose them trying to challenge everywhere on the board.
- I scored 186 out of the 250 available primary points. The games I won, I used the Sharp Scoring System more effectively to dominate the primary.
Where I Dropped Points
The key / most memorable moments where I failed to stick effectively to the System: - Game 1 vs Chaos Knights: I made a staging mistake with my Primary Denial unit of Rough Riders. This meant they were visible to a big Chaos Knight who managed to pick them up. This meant my ability to a) deny primary through OC and b) kill a big knight in melee was severely hampered.
- Game 4 vs Imperial Guard: In the mirror match, I pushed one of my Primary Scoring units of Bullgryn into the middle to try and kill a unit of Death Riders. This left my scoring unit exposed without sufficient back up to keep the trades rolling. This meant my own primary had to be held by other units that would have been more useful elsewhere.
The Key 5-Point Swing Moments
Game 1 vs Chaos Knights: As above, losing my primary denial unit meant my opponent was able to score an 18 on Primary compared to my 6.
Game 2 vs Chaos Knights (again!): Playing CK on Purge the Foe scoring presented an additional challenge with the “kill more” criteria for Primary scoring. This made me refocus on the Sharp Scoring Series and use my Primary Denial units more conservatively then in the previous round. By doing this there was only 1 turn where my opponent was able to score the “kill more” element.
Game 5 vs Eldar: On the classic Take and Hold mission I was able to secure my expansion and use my trade and staged firepower units to keep my opponent to a 5 on primary each round.

What I’m Adjusting Before the Next Event:
- Deployment and Staging: Whilst I said earlier that my Rogal Dorns were able to move to control firing lanes early there were moments in each game where my other vehicles were outside of order range meaning I wasn’t utilising my army rules to their full potential. Practicing this on TTS or with a friend can help me in the future.
- Turn 3 Inflection Point: I need to practice this where my opponents list has more primary denial and trade units. In my Game 4 against Imperial Guard it was the first game where I was outnumbered in that respect and it cost me on Primary and Secondary scoring.
- Strategic Reserve Choices: In game 1 having all my Primary Denial units on the board from the start was intended to make my opponent play more cagey. However it meant that I actually wasn’t able to Stage the Rough Riders safely enough, leading them to die without being used as intended. Having a unit like this in reserve would have made my opponent still have to be wary, but also enable me to react to the board state.
The next planned event for me is in April – I will use this to write about how I prepare, practice and play! Until then:
